Layflat Fire Hose Buying Guide: Sizes, Linings & Couplings

Fire hose looks like a commodity, but the buying decision sits in four details: whether you need a supply line or a reel appliance, how the jacket and lining are built, what diameter and length match your delivery duty, and which coupling system your market uses. This guide walks importers and distributors through each one — and where to push back on a supplier's spec sheet.

1. Layflat Fire Hose vs Fire Hose Reel: Know Which You Are Buying

The fastest way to mis-specify is to confuse the hose with the appliance. A layflat fire hose is a length of flexible, flat-folding hose that a fire crew or pump operator connects at both ends; a fire hose reel is a wall-mounted unit with hose pre-wound on a drum, permanently tied to the building supply and ready for an untrained occupant to use.

2. Hose Construction: Jacket, Lining & Edge Sealing

A layflat fire hose is a composite: the woven jacket carries the pressure and takes the abrasion; the lining seals the bore and determines media compatibility; and the edges and ends decide how long the hose survives rough use.

  • Jacket — look for a woven synthetic fiber jacket with dense weave. Our hose uses woven synthetic fiber with PVC rubber lining; the weave density is what resists scuffing on concrete and prevents the hose bursting out at folds.
  • Lining — PVC rubber lining gives a smooth bore with low friction loss and suits clear water and foam mixture media. For harsher chemicals the lining specification must change — confirm the media before ordering rather than assuming one lining fits all.
  • Edge and corner reinforcement — flat-fold hose is most vulnerable where it folds and where ends are clamped. Woven edge sealing and reinforced corners are the features that stop delamination at exactly those points; both are standard on our production.
  • End treatment — couplings are fitted or supplied loose depending on the order; loose ends suit distributors who crimp or clamp couplings locally, factory-fitted ends guarantee a tested joint.

When comparing supplier spec sheets, ask three questions: what is the weave material and density, what is the lining compound, and how are the edges sealed? Generic "rubber hose" descriptions hide all three answers.

3. Sizing: Diameter, Length & Applications

The inner diameter decides flow capacity, the length decides reach, and the wrong pair means either starving the nozzle or dragging excess weight.   • 19-25mm — small-bore lines for light duty and some reel-style applications.
  • 40-50mm — branch lines where crews work with hand lines and smaller flows.
  • 65mm (2.5") — the standard attack/supply line size for most building and industrial firefighting, and the 8-65 model's configuration.
  • 100mm and above — relay and hydrant supply lines moving large volumes over distance, up to 400mm in our range for bulk transfer.

Length is where OEM matters most: our PVC rubber lining layflat fire hose is produced with customizable length, diameter and logo, and the spec sheet carries a bearing capacity of 50-200 kN as the strength reference for the woven construction. Note that bearing capacity is a tensile/structural figure, not the working pressure — always request the pressure rating for your exact diameter separately, and never infer it from coupling ratings alone.

4. Couplings & Connection Standards

For German-standard installations, the 2.5" aluminum Storz coupling provides the quick-connect, self-sealing edge joint rated at 1.6 MPa for clear water and foam mixture. Specify the coupling system in the inquiry, not after production: retro-fitting threads on finished hose ends is expensive and rarely as reliable as factory-matched couplings.

5. Nozzles & Flow Control

A hose is only as useful as the nozzle on its end. For hand lines, an adjustable nozzle with variable flow and spray patterns covers the range from straight stream (reach) to fog (heat shielding and knockdown).   • Match nozzle flow to hose delivery — a nozzle demanding more than the hose diameter can deliver starves the stream and wastes pump energy; state the intended flow when we size the hose diameter.
