B2B Valve Sourcing Checklist: How to Verify a Fire Equipment Manufacturer
Fire protection equipment is life-safety hardware — a counterfeit or under-tested valve can fail in exactly the emergency it exists for. Yet the sector is full of trading companies presenting themselves as manufacturers. This checklist is the same 8-point diligence our own buyers run on us. Use it on every supplier, including us.
The 8-Point Verification Checklist
1. Certificates — verify, don't collect
Ask for the actual certificate documents (UL, FM, CE, LPCB, ISO 9001) and check three things: the certificate holder name matches the manufacturer, the standard/edition is current, and the product range on the certificate covers the exact model you are buying. Logos in a brochure prove nothing. A genuine manufacturer will publish its certification package — ours is on the certificates page.
2. Test reports — batch, not template
A generic test certificate can be downloaded from anywhere. Request the hydrostatic and seat-leakage test reports for the actual batch you will receive, with serial numbers and dates. If the supplier cannot produce batch-level reports, your "manufacturer" may not have a test bay at all.
3. Factory evidence — video or visit
A live video walk-through of the production line and hydraulic test bench takes ten minutes and eliminates most imposters. If a supplier refuses or insists on stock photos, treat it as a red flag. For large orders, budget for a third-party inspection (SGS/BV-style) at pre-shipment.
4. Sample before bulk
Order one sample unit first. Test it against your spec, weigh it, and compare the casting quality and coating thickness to the factory photos. Samples are cheap insurance — and a genuine factory will happily sell you one.
5. Company substance
Check the business licence, factory address and how long the company has been operating. Look for a real website with technical depth (specs, datasheets, guides), not a one-page storefront. A manufacturer that has shipped for years leaves a traceable trail of technical content.
6. Payment terms
For first orders, a 30/70 split (30% deposit, 70% against B/L or inspection) is standard practice. Be wary of demands for full payment upfront or payments to personal accounts. Use a letter of credit or a secured payment method until trust is established.
7. Lead time and communication
A competent factory answers technical questions in writing within one working day and commits to a production schedule it can keep. Vague lead times, evasive answers on test data, or salespeople who cannot explain their own product's specs are warning signs.
8. Spares and support
Ask about spare parts (seals, stems, couplings) and after-sales support before you order, not after commissioning. A manufacturer that stocks spares and documents maintenance procedures is building a long-term relationship; a trader disappears after the shipment.

How to Request a Verified Quote
A good inquiry gets a good response. Include: product type and model, DN/PN, connection standard, required certification (UL/FM/CE/other), target quantity, destination country and port. A supplier that answers with a structured datasheet and test plan — not just a price — is demonstrating exactly the competence the checklist above verifies.

How can I check factory quality beyond the documents? +
Ask for a live video walk-through of the production and test bay, request photos of the actual batch (not stock photos), and consider a third-party inspection (SGS/BV/TUV style) at pre-shipment. A factory that hides its floor is a factory with something to hide.
