Fire Sprinkler Control Valve Types: OS&Y, Butterfly & Check Valves

A sprinkler system is only as reliable as its control valves. In short: use a monitored OS&Y gate valve for main isolation, monitored butterfly valves for sections, check valves inside the alarm valve assembly, and a deluge or pre-action valve where the system must stay dry until a fire signal. This guide explains each fire sprinkler control valve type and how to specify it correctly.

1. What Fire Sprinkler Control Valves Do

Control valves sit between the water supply and the sprinkler heads. They isolate parts of the system for maintenance, hold water back until it is needed, and — critically — they must report their open/closed position so nobody can accidentally shut down fire protection. That monitoring requirement is why the valve types below are not interchangeable with ordinary industrial valves.

When you search for a "fire sprinkler control valve", you are usually looking for one of four things: an OS&Y gate valve for the main supply, a signal butterfly valve for section control, the check/alarm valve assembly at the riser, or a deluge/pre-action valve for special hazard systems. 2. OS&Y Gate Valves: Monitored Main Isolation

The OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) gate valve is the classic main control valve for sprinkler risers and fire mains. Because the threaded stem is outside the bonnet, the stem rises visibly as the valve opens — anyone walking past can see whether the valve is open, and a supervisory switch on the yoke reports the position to the fire alarm panel.

For fire protection service the valve should carry a recognized listing. Our UL/FM listed resilient seated OS&Y gate valve is supplied with grooved ends from 2" to 10" (DN50-DN250) in nodular cast iron, with a rising stem indicator and EPDM resilient seat for drip-tight closure. Where the project is specified around flanged connections instead, the Z41X ductile iron resilient seat gate valve is the conventional full-bore alternative for main isolation.

Rule of thumb: gate valves open and close slowly (multi-turn) and deliver near-zero pressure loss when fully open — the right choice for a valve that operates rarely but must not restrict flow.

3. Signal Butterfly Valves for Section Control

Where valves are packed into riser rooms, plant rooms or valve manifolds, space is money. A butterfly valve installs with a fraction of the face-to-face length and weight of a gate valve, and its quarter-turn operation makes it easy to actuate. The catch: a plain butterfly valve gives no visual or electrical indication of position, so sprinkler section control uses signal butterfly valves with an integrated tamper/limit switch.

When a drawing says "monitored butterfly valve", the tamper switch specification matters — ask for the limit switch type and IP rating so it interfaces cleanly with your alarm panel.

4. Check Valves and Alarm Valves

A wet sprinkler riser is normally held pressurized by a wet alarm check valve. The ZSFZ-150 wet alarm check valve keeps water in the system piping, and the moment a sprinkler opens, flow lifts the clapper, sounding the hydraulic alarm gong and triggering the pressure switch. Its retard chamber absorbs transient pressure surges so the alarm is not tripped by normal supply fluctuations. ZSFZ sizes run DN100/DN150/DN200 at 1.6 MPa.

For systems that must stay dry until a fire is confirmed — high-hazard occupancies, water-sensitive rooms — the control valve itself becomes a deluge or pre-action valve. The ZSFM deluge alarm valve holds back the supply under diaphragm pressure and opens instantly on a detection signal to flood every open nozzle, while the ZSFY pre-action system requires two independent signals before it floods the piping.
